These days all packages go through the Mount Pleasant sorting office (Royal Mail) so that they can charge the duties and of course collect the £8. I used to buy loads of my supplies from the US but since the royal mail's fee went up from £1 to £8, I have given in. It's annoying when the duty is applied when you're least expecting it - for sure, your bolt of stuff will be charged and no doubt, you'll factor that in? Sometimes you get away with it, sometimes you don't. I once had to pay more in customs than I paid for the thing in the envelope.
