Some finished quilts!

I’ve been busy trying to clear the pile of quilts which are sitting in my studio waiting for sleeves and labels and finishing off in general.  I finally got started yesterday and finishing one seemed to be the stimulus I needed and now there are four hanging on the walls…

There’s a small problem with the next couple of quilts – I can’t decide which way up they should be!!  What do you think?

This one is habutai silk hand dyed and machine quilted quite improvisationally.  I added the scrim and appliqued the flower petals as I went along because they felt right.  The whole thing is very textural.  I started off meaning it to be the top orientation but in lots of ways I quite like the bottom one now.  Maybe I should put two sleeves on!!!

The next quilt is one I made with the kids – we glued on lots of small scraps of fabrics and I stitched them down and then quilted it, again quite spontaneously.  Again, I started off thinking it would be the top orientation but now am not sure…

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Nice work. I like the bottom orientation best. It looks more grounded.

I think the bottom orientation on both as well if that’s any help.

I’ve been reading your blog for sometime now & just had to add my 2 cents worth-add sleeves to both ends so you can change the orientation when ‘the mood strikes’. Keep blogging.

Thank you everyone! I think having two sleeves may be the way to go – I will need to put them on anyway because I did Melody Johnston’s ‘pillowcase’ method of turning and quilting so I have a fused slit to cover up! And if I go with my preferred orientation I think I will have it at the bottom! Obviously I work better upside down….

please keep the opinions coming in…. Thanks!

    Hi There,
I like the top orientation in both cases. I gyess this is a personal preference thing… you could make them so that they could be hung either way I guess.

The first one, I prefer the red flowing downward and in the second quilt I like the orange area upwards, but I honestly think they both work in both orientations.

For the first quilt, the bottom orientation. For the second, the top.

The bottom one in the silk as the red is quite solid and forms a base. The top one in the second one as it just feels right this way! Both are lovely and I like the swirly quilting in the second one.

For the second, what about on its side (landscape orientation)?

The top one I prefer with the red at the bottom and the bottom one I like the oreange at the top. but what a brilliant idea to have 2 sleeves and why not try Shirley’s suggestion for the bottom one?

On the first one, I really like the red at the top….it reminds me of a tree when it’s changing colors in the fall.
